For this assignment, students will investigate and propose a psychiatric diagnosis based on the case study from the Gorenstein and Comer (2015) textbook Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology, chosen in the Week One “Initial Call” discussion. This paper will include an in-depth overview of the disorder(s) within the diagnosis, treatment options for the diagnosis, and a sound rationale that explains why this diagnosis was made. Note that the diagnosis may include more than one psychiatric disorder.
The paper must present a thorough overview of each disorder within the diagnosis. Assume the audience has no prior knowledge of the disorder(s) within the diagnosis, and provide relevant and easy to understand explanations of each for the readers. When writing the paper, it is critical to convey all the necessary information in a straightforward manner using non-technical language. Discussion (follow up answers)
On the side of the therapist, cultural competence is an ethical obligation and plays a vital role in Chrissy’s plight with her family. Chrissy is a 28 old female of Argentinean descent and her parents believe that she ought to stay at home and become a mom to raise children of her own. Now conducting culturally competent evaluations on the side of the therapist to understand, appreciate and get to know Chrissy’s family belief system thus enabling the therapist to work closely with Chrissy’s behaviors, attitudes and work having grown up in the United States of course this will make sense as to why she wants to be an entrepreneur by setting up a clothing line.
Being cultural competent plays into treatment of Chrissy by the essential principles of cultural competence that help Chrissy to respect and gain a mutual understanding of her family’s viewpoints, her creativity increases on how to solve the problem by creating perspectives which are new like setting up a clothing line for pregnant women, she also gets to do away with the unwanted surprises that slow her progress, she increases involvement and participation in her family’s cultural aspects, she also gets to be more trusting and cooperative hence overcoming her fear of mistakes that her parents want and reduces conflict. This also helps her to promote equality and inclusion in other aspects outside her family belief system. Potential biasness of the therapist creates a tendency to marginalize Chrissy’s aspects, it also acts as a looking glass to Chrissy’s experience hence enlightening, deepening and transforming the connection and relationship between the therapist and Chrissy.
The theoretical orientation that I feel would be most effective in working with Chrissy would be Humanistic therapy (Grohol, 28). This approach will play an essential role in emphasizing Chrissy’s goal of wanting to be an independent entrepreneur by starting a designer clothing line for pregnant women rather than yielding to her family’s expectations of her being a stay at home mom and raising children. This orientation will emphasize her to make a rational choice and develop to her maximum potential as she respects her family, she will have the freedom to choose what she wants in her life and hence motivating her behavior towards “self-actualization” to become something more of herself in the future.
